The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Transit Operator-A grade A11 position in the Office of Transportation/Senior Transportation.

This is a skilled craft position whereby the incumbent operates commercial passenger vehicles, multi-passenger vans, and ancillary equipment (wheelchair lift, two-way radio) for the purpose of transporting customers with special needs (senior citizens, person with disabilities) to assigned destinations. Para-transit routes are primarily followed; however fixed routes may be assigned if necessary. The incumbent is evaluated based on the safe and efficient operation of vehicles as relates to the transport of passengers and the quality of services provided to customers. The incumbent must demonstrate a professional, pleasant, courteous, and helpful demeanor towards the public at all times and must be able to maintain composure in stressful situations. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to the elements. Incumbent must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50lbs on a regular basis and must wear and maintain a uniform and safety equipment. Incumbent is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands and finger, handle and feel objects, tools and controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Ability to operate light to heavy duty county vehicles in excess of 26,000 pounds. DPW&T employees are considered "Essential" and are required to participate in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program, during natural and man-made disasters, and during special operations/activities as assigned. Essential employees are expected to report for work or remain at work when other employees are granted Administrative Leave.

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T's workforce keeps the County's various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or a G.E.D.
  • One (1) year of transit operation experience with direct customer service experience.
  • Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger airbrake or mandatory passenger endorsements.
  • Must have a current DOT physical certification card.

  • Must submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration driving record.

General Plan Information: The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31. A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. New employees must enroll in the County's health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date. The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire. After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
